Navigation Patterns for SaaS Dashboards
Sidebars, command palettes, and contextual actions for dense products.
Nestlancer Editorial

Dashboard navigation carries module switching, contextual actions, and wayfinding without eating horizontal space on laptops.
Sidebar patterns
- Collapsible icon rail for power users
- Section headers grouping related routes
- Badge counts for actionable inbox items only—not noise
Command palette
Cmd+K search for routes, recent entities, and actions. Essential above ~15 primary screens.
Contextual actions
Row-level menus for table actions; bulk actions in sticky bar when selection active.
Breadcrumbs
Use when hierarchy depth > 2. Clickable ancestors—not decorative on flat IA.
Mobile dashboard nav
Bottom tab bar for top 4 modules; overflow for settings. Do not replicate entire desktop sidebar in hamburger only.
Navigation should match frequency—daily tools one click; quarterly settings buried is fine.
