Form Design for Higher Conversion

Every extra field costs conversions. Form design optimizes label clarity, validation timing, and error copy—not just removing CAPTCHA.

Label placement

Top-aligned labels scan fastest on mobile. Placeholder-as-label fails accessibility and memory.

Validation timing

  • Validate format on blur (email, phone)
  • Do not scream errors before user finishes field
  • Inline success for complex passwords meeting rules

Error copy

Bad: "Invalid input." Good: "Enter a work email—we'll send the invite there."

Multi-step forms

Show progress (step 2 of 3). Allow back navigation without data loss.

Conversion checklist

  • Autofill attributes on address/payment fields
  • Single column on mobile
  • Primary CTA verb matches outcome ("Create account" not "Submit")
  • Guest checkout if ecommerce applicable

Forms are conversation—clarity and respect beat clever minimalism that hides requirements.
