SaaS Metrics Every Founder Must Track
ARR, churn, CAC, LTV, and activation — the numbers that decide whether growth is healthy or cosmetic.
Nestlancer Editorial

Vanity signups do not pay salaries. Unit economics and retention tell you whether growth compounds or leaks—and investors spot the difference in one spreadsheet row.
Core metrics dashboard
| Metric | Healthy signal | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| ARR / MRR | Steady net new | Flat with high churn |
| Logo churn | < 5% annual (SMB) | Spikes after price change |
| Net revenue retention | > 100% | Expansion failing |
| CAC payback | < 18 months | Lengthening quarterly |
| Activation rate | > 40% week-one | Users stall at signup |
Activation definition
Pick one milestone that predicts retention—for project tools, "three tasks created with collaborator invited" beats "logged in twice."
Cohort discipline
Report churn by signup month, not blended averages. A good average hides a bad recent cohort.
Weekly founder ritual
30 minutes every Monday: MRR bridge, churn reasons from support tags, pipeline coverage for next quarter. Numbers without narrative are noise; narrative without numbers is fantasy.
Track fewer metrics deeply rather than dozens on a dashboard nobody opens.
