Pricing Strategy for SaaS Startups
Value metrics, packaging tiers, and when to raise prices without churn spikes.
Nestlancer Editorial

Pricing is positioning. Value metrics align what you charge with what customers value—seats for collaboration tools, usage for API products, records for CRMs.
Packaging tiers
| Tier | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Starter | Activation, low support cost |
| Pro | Core revenue, full features |
| Enterprise | SSO, audit, custom terms |
Three tiers maximum at early stage—more creates decision paralysis.
Raising prices without churn spikes
- Grandfather existing customers 6–12 months with clear comms
- Tie increase to new value (SSO, compliance module)
- Offer annual lock-in at old rate for one cycle
- Monitor logo churn cohort 30/60/90 days post-change
Willingness-to-pay research
Talk to ten customers who almost churned and ten who expanded. Ask what they'd pay double for—not what they think you should charge.
Avoid race to bottom
Competing on cheapest trains customers to leave for $5 cheaper. Compete on outcomes and reliability.
Revisit pricing annually; underpricing is a silent cap on product investment.
