Designing Voice and Zero-UI Interfaces

Voice works when hands are busy and eyes are elsewhere—driving, cooking, warehouse floors. Zero-UI still needs confirmation for irreversible actions.

When voice fits

  • Lookup and status queries
  • Timer and reminder setting
  • Hands-free field data capture

When voice fails

  • Complex comparisons requiring visual scan
  • Sensitive data in public spaces
  • Noisy environments without headset

Multimodal confirmation

"Send $500 to Vendor A—say yes to confirm." Display card on screen simultaneously when device has display.

Fallback patterns

Always offer touch or type path when speech recognition confidence low. Never voice-only trap.

Error recovery

Reprompt with narrowed choices—not infinite "I didn't catch that."

Voice UX is conversation design—script happy paths and graceful failure, test with diverse accents.
