Designing AI Copilot Interfaces
Trust cues, citation patterns, and human override for agentic product surfaces.
Nestlancer Editorial

Copilot UIs must earn trust—users tolerate wrong autocomplete once; wrong agentic action ends relationships.
Trust cues
- Show sources and citations for factual claims
- Display confidence or "I'm unsure" states
- Separate user message from system actions visually
Human override
Stop generation button, undo last action, edit-before-send for customer-facing replies.
Citation patterns
Inline footnotes linking to docs, tickets, or code files—not hallucinated-looking blurbs.
Scope boundaries
Copilot panel suggests; destructive actions require explicit confirm modal with summary.
Streaming UX
Token streaming with stable layout—avoid layout jump as text grows. Skeleton for tool-call pending states.
Evaluation UI
Thumbs feedback per response feeds quality loops—optional comment on failure.
Agentic interfaces are products of accountability—design for correction, not only automation pride.
