Design System Governance at Scale
Contribution models, versioning, and adoption metrics for shared component libraries.
Nestlancer Editorial

Design systems die without contribution rules—either rigid gatekeeping stalls adoption, or chaos reintroduces one-off buttons.
Contribution model
| Tier | Process |
|---|---|
| Core primitives | Design system council approval |
| Domain components | Team PR with design review |
| Experiments | Feature-flagged, time-boxed |
Versioning
Semantic versioning for breaking token or API changes. Migration guides per major release.
Adoption metrics
- % of screens using system components vs custom CSS
- Time to implement standard form from Figma to merged PR
- Support questions in #design-system channel trending down
Deprecation policy
Announce 2 sprints ahead, codemod where possible, remove duplicates aggressively.
Governance enables scale—it does not mean bureaucracy for a button color tweak with token.
